rio strut mount questions

So I have read through a bunch of old threads but I'm still not clear on a couple things.
I see people say to use a tapered lug nut to hold the festiva strut centred in the rio mount but nobody I found has said what size for sure or what vehicle they come off of. I don't have spare lug nuts to try so I would have to buy them...
Also how do you tighten the top nut properly since there is no flat spot in the mount and how do you loosen it again if need be? Loctite doesn't seem to be a good answer to me and I would think that a lug nut would loosen off eventually right?
Then the washers that go between the mount and top hat- are people re-using the plastic ones from the festiva strut mounts or metal washers?

I used a dorman lug nut on my tops. after a lot of miles its still tight. cheap at any parts store and they can be purchased in small quantities.

Try a 12 x 1.5 lug nut, a very common thread pitch. You could also take the strut to a hardware store or a McParts store and try to find out what the threads are that way.

I just discovered this potential method while pulling a BP from the Escort GT. The engine mount has two thick conical washers. I haven't verified it yet but if the ID is correct it's good.

Not that anyone is going to go to the JY just for two washers, but just a heads up.

I used a 3/8 drive impact to tighten it.

Are you using the stock festiva struts with rio mounts?.
I use the lugnuts but with mk3 coilovers
The coilovers shaft comes in 2 different sizes that I've see and mine was the larger 14mm I believe.
I got my lugnuts for a Cadillac escalade.
I've also had the conical washer but the ones I had where to large to seat into the rio mount.

Yes, he was the only one i saw who said he did, so i was wondering if he was the only one or if its more common

Ok, good to know they dont come loose. Do they need to be retorqued just like on your tires? Lol.
Dorman is a brand just like ford or snap-on, they make a lot of different lug nuts but looks like i got the threads below.

Thanks! I will try that die and see if it threads on. Otherwise ill bring the strut to a hardware store first to get the thread size, then google what cars thake that size and then go to a parts store. The parts store guys here are not interested in helping people, their mostly pretty useless if you dont have a make, model and want a common part.....

I found a civic lug nut that threaded on but has a ball end which doesnt seem to fit tight or nice on the bearing. Ill go to a store for one with a cone end.

customized 2 lug nuts. I bought conicle 12x1.5 nuts but they just barely went inside the taper on the bearing. I know everyone says it works but i have a lathe so now the fit the ID of that bearing. Tight enough that theres no play but loose enough that they can turn inside the bearing. I will put some anti sieze on there i think to prevent it from rusting to the bearing. Is that a bad idea? That leads me to ask again- everyone is just using an impact and no loctite or anything and they dont loosen over time and are still removable later?

You don't use loctite on lug nuts ant they are subject to higher shock loads... You'll be good.
