  • Brake issues!!

Ok ladys and gentleman a little back story first....The Steve started pulling to the left the other day i did a visual inspection everything seemed good, the pulling was worse the next day so i bled all the brakes and found no fluid at the rear brakes at all..moved back to the junction where the flex line connects to hard line on both sides and had fluid so ended up replacing flex lines and wheel cylinder to be on safe side( thanks for the rock auto discount thread btw!), bled brakes and had a crazy stiff pedal..i then found master cylinder leaking so replaced it...pedal still the same, hard as rock, sooo, replaced brake booster finally got a good pedal back ..got everything done went for a drive and still had the pull to the left, at this point im pulling my hair out, replaced front calipers and rubber lines cause i figured at this point why not replace it all!, oh and tried to replace proportioning valve no luck on a replacement so snagged the one off of my parts car...got everything done went for a drive and have great brakes that still freaking pull to the left but not nearly as bad but its still there! So did i miss something? I also had a NOS e brake cable that i put on at this time and it seems to work good. The back brakes dont seem to be dragging and i have bled the system 3 different times on 2 and 3 no air bubbles at all. Not sure what else to do with it. Also can a proportioning valve be rebuilt? Thanks ahead of time

Did you check all of your Hard lines to make sure none of them got kinked somehow?

Napa has bendable, no kink, ready made brake line with installed end fittings in different sizes and lengths.

Our proportioning valves have no real rebuildable parts like others. Basically, it just routes the fluid to the corresponding hard lines unlike most that contain a piston that guages the amount of pressure to front vs rear or diagonally on some cars in the past and uses a piston that moves one side or the other tripping a switch to the warning light on the dash. Our switch is in the master cylinder. If you have a hangup that pulls you to one side, you have to have a blockage in a line or port stopping the flow of fluid to a right front caliper. or the slide pin of the caliper has to be frozen on the right. Since you just installed new calipers, that "shouldn't" be the problem, you could check each wheel for the proper and equal amount of pressure with a pressure guage. I suspect front brakes for a pull, as that has always been where I found my problems in the past. Sounds to me the front left brake is doing all the work. Concentrate on the front right checking the the slide pins, proper pad/clip installation and the flex line if it has collapsed inside restricting flow. I don't claim to know it all by any stretch, but always seemed to be tweaking brakes it seemed over the years on mine FWIW. I wish you well, and hope you find this soon.
Oh, sounds stupid, but you didn't loose one of your rubber sway bar control arm bushings did you? Flex of the control arm would certainly pull also.

I have thought maybe the suspension might be my culprit also...i finally have time today to check the front calipers again and i am going to look at sway bar ect..i do have quite a bit of play in my steering rack was wondering if that might be contributing to my issue thanks for the info

How hard are you braking when it pulls? Lightly, with the pads and shoes barely engaging? Or dead on the pedal? Could be as simple as the right rear brake adjuster not working. And do you feel any pull with throttle input? If it changes left/right when you switch on/off throttle (I suggest testing in 3rd gear, ~3k rpm), then the common factor is suspension.
Also, I thought we only have a METERING valve, not a proportioning valve...

Sorry it took so long to get back to this want to say thanks to all for the help, well ended up being a culmination of an adjuster not working, a new caliper not acting right, imagine that a new part not working, and ball joint i found to be questionable..was making a strange noise when i checked the suspension parts ao replaced it...after all those things were addressed i now am braking straight again thanks again all
