  • Newbie help, parking break not engaging enough to actually park.

So when you pull the parking break you can see it move in the rear all the way to the wheels but it has no tension. Now possibly could I just adjust the cable and maybe get it going again?

Also what size tires do I need, I can't find an owners manual anywhere.

If you pull the handbrake up and look down inside the plastic there youll see an adjusting nut that be tightened.
However your self adjusters are likely siezed which will cause the handbrake to not work, and if it does engage slightly to not release.
Tire size is printed on the door. Lots of info on this site on what tires you can use. 145/80 r12 and 165/70 r12 were what they came with from factory. Are you looking to use 12, 13, 14 or 15inch rims?

Look in the drivers door jamb for tire info, but I would go 13s or 14's and forget about the 12's.
As for breaks you should probably pull the rear drums and check your pads . Also repack or replace your bearings if needed.

I'll have to check what rims I have on right now. I'm trying to get some 14 inch rims from a junkyard but for the time being I probably just need some replacements.

Thanks for all the help so far!

Definitely buy the rims first, don't waste your time buying 12's. If you need some tires to get you by until you have the 14s, You can use mine for free (Assuming you are in Springfield IL)

Springfield MO! Thanks for the offer though man! I'll try to source the rims, what is the bolt pattern I'm looking for? I've heard ford escort rims are good to use? To tell the truth this is the first car I've ever tried to do anything myself or fix up at all so for the most part it's been reading as much as I can on the internet! Haha

4x114.3. Ideally 14x5 to 14x6, can't go much wider than that. Offset of (I think) 30-38. 165/55R14 Achilles ATR-K tires are highly recommended. Fairly cheap ($220 or less shipped for all 4) with a good life and performance.

Tons of options, just have to watch the offset.
I installed bigger aspire brakes which have a different bolt pattern so i got rims with a multi bolt pattern so that i can use them front and back.
The achilles tires are great! I got the next size smaller, by 3%. So i have a quicker get up and go but you loose some highway gas milage because your revving higher. They are the 165/50 14. They look good, have nice tread and lots of festiva guys have tried them and i havent seen anyone say anything bad about them.

I have four nice 13" Geo Metro rims with 155/80-13 tires. 4x114 bolt pattern. Three have good tread, one is iffy. $70 and meet you halfway, maybe Rolla?
