  • Ticking every couple seconds in idle. Gets faster and more prominent at high Rpms.

Hi, this is my first post on this forum but my family has been members for years. Anyway, my fiance's car has been acting up since we bought it and I finally got it ironed out and she has been driving it everywhere. For the past month though, her car has been ticking pretty bad. It has the soft tick (that most festivas have when they're high mileage) but it has an intermittent tick (about 8 clicks in a row every 5 seconds or so) on the left side of the engine compartment. It sounds like it's coming from the pulleys. Her car is an automatic and her car is having signs of transmission issues so I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. Her car has air conditioning and the AC belt is pretty loose when it's running and when I climb underneath it I swear the sound is coming from the AC motor. If anyone has any insight as to what this could be or if it is a reason to even be alarmed, I would really appreciate so help. I can provide any additional information that is needed. Thanks guys!

Is it making that sound when the A/C is off or on?

Use a length of hose to isolate the sound. Put one end in an ear and the other in various locations inside the engine compartment and listen for when the noise is loudest.

Does it sound like it could be a relay? Or the ac clutch trying to kick in and its not able to?
        Does the a/c work?
The click is intermittant, but is it always while your moving or sometimes when stopped? Only when turning or driving straight as well?
Its an auto so does that small fan in front of the condenser work?

When we bought the car, we were told that the AC pump was not in it, but when I looked, it has the little motor with the pully on it. We honestly haven't tried to run the AC.. Whether she is in drive or park, it ticks like that. The fan by the condenser works. I'm going to try the hose method to pinpoint the source of the sound and I will check back in!
