  • Bad engine rattle.

    Hey everyone!

So my belt replacement has been going great! The festiva has been running like a champ! Went on a 30 mile drive last night with no issues from the belt, alternator, or water pump!

But this morning, when I turned it on, there's now an awful grinding sound.

The belt is spinning fine and it appears it only makes the grinding noise when the RPMs are a little high.

The car itself is running great! The engine feels like it is at full power as usual and the ride is nice and smooth even with the grinding noise.

I double checked and all of the attaching parts I removed for the belt are nice and secure. I don't get the noise!

    Check out the video.

Only happens when the engine is revved

Sory I can't listen to video - slow dialup connection. However, can you hear the grinding at idle? Suggest park car, start engine, rev to hear grinding with head in engine bay and listen to see which end of the engine it's coming from. Another suggestion is remove belt for a short time to try again at park idling engine to see if grinding goes away. If it goes away I'd supect the water pump as it and the alternator run off the belt. Hope that helps.

Also could be something new and unrelated... maybe the starter pinion gear not kicking all the way out. Try putting you hand on the starter body and see
if you feel any difference when you hear it and when you don't.

My first guess is bad alt. but it is just a guess. Could also be a water pump.

You could take the belt off and see if noise goes away. Or you may have to wait until something fails.

Does it make the noise when the clutch is pressed in?

Does it make the noise going down the road?

It does make noise at high RPMs on the road, when clutch is pushed in, nothing.

If noises go away with the clutch disengaged it sounds like the noise is coming from the transmission. I would check the fluid level. If it is making that much noise the damage may have been done.

I also, would take the belt off and see if it still makes the sound. Sounds like a loose water pump pulley or bad alternator. It might be why the belt came off.

If it does not make a noise when the clutch is pushed in, then that sounds like a throwout bearing. Otherwise, it would likely appear that you have a bad alternator or water pump bearing.

After watching the video, it sounds like the alternator bearing. What are you doing when the noise stops momentarily during the video?
