  • Power Mirror Disassembly?

Does anyone know how (or even if) to take apart 88/9 LX power mirrors?

I have 2 good pairs that need repainted, and I want to take them apart to do it right.

I have 1 broken one to experiment with. After messing around, I noticed the actual part the glass glues to is held on with a screw... Under the glass. So removing that part from the outside pretty much requires you to remove and likely break the mirror glass.

There may be a way to get at it from the inside, but it has a super heavy spring to keep it from folding, which seems like it would be very difficult to re-attach once removed, and is keeping me from accessing any other screws.

Any ideas/tips/tricks? Has anybody done this before?

ill look on mine i just installed when i get home but in the couple i have taken apart in my few years of car life usually there is a plastic retainer around the housing for the mirror that snaps in place remove it then use your finger and move the mirror around and look for a retaining screw under the mirror somewhere inside the housing that holds the mirror itself on. i get home around 530ish here in Washington so like 730ish your time ill look at mine if you haven't got it apart yet and let ya know

power mirror.jpg this is the trim piece to remove it should just unsnap. be careful though can be brittle over years of sun. then use your finger to push the mirror side to side and look for the mounting screws ( thats how most are held together not 100% on these this is just a picture i found online of a festiva power mirror

Well, sounds simple enough. I will test it on my busted one and report back, along with pictures.

I have a tool for Swoopy disassembly only. Not for 88/89.
I can take them apart, replace the rusted ball bearings with stainless ones, regrease and reassemble.

Yea, I read through your post. Sadly I bought swoopys and then immediately sold them to the Philippines haha.

Just checked the other day, and that trim is all part of the casing, it's not actually separate or removable. Back to square one!
