  • Need Fuel pump advice.

Hello out there. I would like to know If I should install an electric fuel pump to my engine. I used a 1990 ford festiva fuel injected engine, switched over the intake to carburated intake, and added a mechanical fuel pump' But the engine will not hold a steady idle and goes dead if I do not keep my foot on the gas to keep it from going dead. the engine runs as long as I pump the gas to keep it running. The carburetor is new from the box so I do not think that's the problem. Any tips or advice, many thanks in advance.

Put the fuel line in a bottle and crank the engine is there substantial fuel in the bottle or just dribbles? If there is substantial fuel you need to be looking at other things such as an intake leak a big vacuum leak, way out of time, idle cutoff not connected, choke not adjusted correctly. There are lots of possibilities. Many carbs have a vent tube which is accesable through the air horn if so you can fill the carb through the vent tube using a mustard or dish soap bottle full of gas,or fill through the fuel inlet if vent access is not available start and run it if the problem is gone you have a pump problem . If the problem is still present you need to start troubleshooting. Is your EGR valve in place? Is it stuck open ? Make sure you do not have manifold vacuum run to the egr valve.

I run twin carbs with the stock EFI gas tank and EFI pump.
The only reason, is because there is no room for a mechanical pump.
I use a Holley bypass regulator in conjunction with a resistor to slow down the pump.
      No problemo.
I also vented my gas cap.
Loosen your gas cap and then idle it to see what happens.
Make sure your evap system is not creating a vacuum in the tank.
Also, make sure you change the pickup sock in your gas tank.
When was the last time you changed your fuel filter?
      A simplified evap system.
