  • cooling fan fuse keeps blowing

My cooling fan fuse in the dash keeps blowing. 20A fuse, if I unplug the wire on the thermostat (fan should be always on) - it immediately blows. If I put a 30 amp fuse in, it will hold. When I did this the fusible link for the main (middle one) started smoking so I took it out, cleaned the contacts, then put a PAL 40A fuse in - no more smoking.

I've looked around and can't see any grounds but there is a splice in the wires to the cooling fan - would this be a cause of high amp draw?

what else should I check for?

Is the fan running when you put all the bigger fuses in? If so how does it sound?

If you unplug the fan wires that are right by the fan will it still blow the proper size fuses?

If I put the bigger fuse (30A instead of 20A) and turn the key to ON (engine not started) it runs but changes speed (as if it surges) every few seconds

I don't have the ability to unplug the fan wires that go to the fan - the PO had a crimp connect to the relay

Sounds like the po's wiring is shorting. Youll have to Redo it. Otherwise your going to melt wires

Make sure it's wired exactly like this.

Do NOT use larger fuses than are marked... Technically the main fuseable link is rated at 25A slo-blo, so keep that in mind.

yah i was wondering what main PAL fuses to use - when I searched seems like people were using pink (30A) for the side ones and green (40A) for the middle one

does a 25a fuseable link equate to a different PAL fuse?

Ok I got the old crimp connetors off and this is what I have:IMG_20170924_095342.jpg

Does the yellow/red go with the blue/red? Or with the green/black on the fan?

I don't want this thing spinning backwards..

Well, got it sorted. Yellow wire goes to blue/red, yelow/red wire goes to blue/blackIMG_20170924_113042.jpg

justin, check this schematic for accuracy.

I personally recommend that you buy a terminal extractor, open barrel crimper and some new replacement brass Yazaki terminals from Eastern Beaver. You can reuse the existing connectors and do not have to clean any existing terminals. You will also be able to unplug your fan motor.

thanks - i'll check that out. I'm a simpleton - i just know how to solder and shrink wrap. I have tried crimping before but i never can get a reliable connection. maybe my tools suck. that stuff you linked to looks nice
