  • Shifters with a lot of play

I just bought a 1988 Ford festiva and as I was test driving it I had a really hard time finding first gear. Upon further inspection even in gear the shifter tended to move. Heck you could move the shifter as if it was in neutral while in gear. Is there anything I can do to make the shifter tighter with less play?

Lots of threads on fixing this. The quick/simple/cheap way is to replace the shifter bushings where the shifter connects to the rod going forward to the tranny. Do a search on "shifter bushings" for helpful threads.

I recommend the $10 eBay Civic short shifter mod on top of all that. You can do it all at the same time and makes the car much more enjoyable to drive.

I use 1/2" bolts and drill out the bolt holes to 1/2" and it cost $5 for three bolts with Nylock nuts, this is my third Festiva to do this way and none have worn out.

If you want to replace them with new bushings shoot me a PM. I just bought a handful of Kia Bushings since they are so much to ship just one set.
