  • Screaching and grinding clutch

Teala is having some severe trouble that has left her unable to operate.

She screeches and and grinds when I try to put her in gear. Once in gear the aweful sound continues. If I try to depress the clutch the sound does not go away. It doesn't go away untill the car is in neutral and the clutch pedal is released.

The clutch does not slip though. It's just terrifyingly loud.

This is a 1992 5 speed man transition.

Do I need to install a new clutch kit or could it be a simpler part of the clutch system.

Could be the throw out bearing or the transmission itself.

Cool. Thanks. Throw out bearing is part of clutch kit. Yes? I think I would still have to remove transmission from engine.

Likely out of fluid. Possibly throw out bearing but check fluid level first.

Ok. I installed a new clutch kit as well as changing and refilling the transmission fluid. Noise is still there.

I spoke too soon. I guess the new transmission fluid had to work its way through the gearbox or something because luckily the sound has gone away now that I put the car in and out of gear a couple of times.

Now all I have to do is readjust the clutch cable.

Good to hear! Probably a bearing that was just a little dry and needed some oil thrown on it.

Yes. Probably just needed fluid top off... Looking back on it clutch probably didn't need replacing. But since both CV axles needed to be replaced the clutch job couldn't have hurt.
