Well I was putting the engine and 5peed from one parts car into a builder and noticed as I was lowering the assembly the piece of wire I stuck through the diff to hold the gears actually had pushed one out of the way so only one was wired, in my attempt to put it back where it needed to be it was swallowed by the transmission. I can sometimes almost get it back into the diff with a magnet but almost doesn't count.Everything is still hanging by a chain right now tomorrow I am going to seperate the engine and trans, and try to get this back in place on a bench where I can manuver the transmission a little better. Has anyone successfully fished a gear back out and got it back in place? What is the correct sealant in case I have to split the transmission, I was thinking aviation permatex or anarobic permatex, but I do not know how they were sealed to begin with.An exploded View may be helpful. I read lots of posts tonight and saw lots of people saying they never have a problem and they toss their trannys around, etc. Well the gears can and do fall in no matter what anyone says, they can!FWIW I am going back to my old never failed me method stick a deep well socket in one side and stuff in a chunk of rag.

On disassembly does anyone know do the shift rails and forks come up with the gear clusters or do you remove the individual shift forks and them remove the clusters. I have the box disassembled now but can't get the shift rails to come uo with my gear clusters. other than that I 've got this. It's in there you missed it, I had already contacted permetex before robotkarate posted this though. So I used ultra grey as per their recommendation. I would have thought anarobic or alcohol based sealer but the said no, ultra grey would be just the ticket.30 + Vehicle projects right now.7 Festiva/Mazda 10 GM IDK how many others, hope that helps explain all the stupid questions/shortcuts/interchanges etc. trying to liquidate so I concentrate on the good ones. [QUOTE=william;749514]Never done an auto but I pull the engine and leave the trans on 5 speed cars . When you go to put it back in trim the backing plate around the passenger axel or it wil hang up when you go to reinstall.[/QUOT
It sounds like a time saver. My only concern would be getting the engine back in. I remembered stabbing the transmission to the clutch disc was a pita with the eng/trans out of the car. It seems like it would be much more difficult with the transmission in the car. I believe I will be needing a clutch replacement on the '91 soon. If I can do it by pulling only the engine that would be a plus. Maybe rotating an axle with the transmission in gear would help to line up the input shaft/clutch disc splines.'88 Festiva LX 5 speed, A/C, Carb, restored $$$ body paint, badly wrecked @ 200k.
'93 Festiva L, 5 speed, Aqua, bought from the original owner,.Zero rust but very nasty otherwise. Awaits the B6T.
'91 Festiva L, 5 speed, bought to drive while putting the B6T in the '93. now B6ME powered.

I had no help and no cherry picker when I removed the transmission and left the engine in and was using just jacks underneath. It probably would have been easier if I had a cherry picker to hold the engine up and
someone to help. The automatic is larger and heaver so there is less space in the engine bay to maneuver.
With the engine and transmission out and hanging by chains on the cherry picker, it was much easier to line up the transmission and bolt the torque converter to the flexplate.
I had the transmission supported by wood blocks and short 2x4's on a small harbor freight dolly and raised and lowered the engine using the cherry picker to get it lined up.
It's also easy to put the starter back on before you reinstall the engine.
Either way you choose, having someone help you makes the job much easier.Last edited by 1990new; 10-26-2017, 11:58 AM.

Have someone help you by pushing the trans down to give it an angle, and drop the engine in with a pretty steep angle to match, and it will typically line up fairly easy. The last time I did it, I had the problem William is talking about, with the plate hanging up on the axle cup. If I had cut it off beforehand, the job would have been less than 30 minutes.'88 Festiva LX 5 speed, A/C, Carb, restored $$$ body paint, badly wrecked @ 200k.

Thanks for all the input, I've already made a decision going to go ahead and pull engine and trans out the top as an assembly. Going to go ahead and do a 5speed swap while the engine and trans are out.As for pulling the engines and transmissions all the festy engines I have pulled were in 4/5 speed cars and I took them out the top as an assembly,All the transmissions I've pulled were 4/5 speed they come out the bottom fast and easy I have my own method that I think is fast and easy. VW golf jetta when you pull a manual trans/engine nbd unbolt everything pull it up like a 5 speed festy. Autos you have to drop the subframe and pull the crank pull to get clearance.Any thing different o n pulling auto festys vs 5 speed festys.
