  • Ran great last night , no start today.

Ok so I drove the car last night and it ran great. Parked it went to crank it up to go to work and it won't start. I have fuel (clear universal fuel filter and it's full) , and I have white spark coming from the coil to the distributor. And yes it's pretty strong , accidentally touched the car while trying to crank lol. Now I have done a crap load of work to this car and this one is stumping me. As for what has been done , here's the list: new battery, water pump, radiator, timing belt and tensioner, valve cover gasket (leaking again), oil pan gasket, clutch and throw out bearing, passenger cv axle, struts and mounts (front), front wheel bearings, rotors, pads, calipers, brake master cylinder, lower control arms with ball joints and sway bar bushings, fuel tank, fuel pump and strainer, plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and air filter. Now I did have a coolant line coming from the bottom of the intake at a 90° barb that went to the throttle body (1 of 2 coolant lines to throttle body) , well the barb broke so I capped off both ends until I could figure out how to proceed with a fix. Now I have a idea but she won't start. I've done other little upgrades to the stereo and speakers but I don't believe that's a issue , i.e.- wired correctly. So I have noticed that since my coolant line fix it has taken a little longer to start (slightly longer cranking) but always fired up. I'm stumped , any suggestions anyone?

If you have spark and fuel, then timing is more than likely your issue. Spray starter fluid in the intake and try starting. Check spark at plugs and that eliminates other components. Make sure your timing belt is not broken.

        First check the inertia switch.

Sorry y'all forgot to mention it's a 92 1.3 efi 5spd. The timing belt and tensioner are new with maybe 3000mi on them. But I'll do my due diligence and look. I'll also check the inertia switch as well just for funsies. No I haven't posted this on Facebook. Not on a festiva page there , yet lol. But I was talking to a friend bout it as well. Going to check to see if spark is coming out of the distributor at the plugs , maybe pull a plug for inspection purposes and checking the groundings for the coil. Corrosion or rust maybe?. Will check when I wake up later. Damn nightshift lol.

Ok, someone else just was having the same issue and also had a clear filter on an efi car.
Check the filter closely, is it a regular carbed filter or is it one meant for efi vehicles? Fuel filters for carbed cars are meant to handle maybe 5psi of suction, not 40+ psi of pressure. Its possible for one of those filters to come apart and plug injectors and stuff.

So your car cranks but wont fire even a little bit?
Let us know if you have spark at each plug.
Timing jumps teeth if the tensioner isnt set right or that spring is weak or something.
Check for vaccum leaks. Perhaps a hose got a crack in it big enough that it doesnt want to start or a hose fell off or something. Foesnt take much of a vaccum leak for a car not to start.

Ok so a little update. I went today to check spark at the #1 cylinder. Pulled the plug and shoved it back on the boot. Laid it on top of the oil cap to visibly see spark while attempting to crank. Well I definitely had spark and it tried to start. So I put the plug back in and it cranked up like normal. Turned the car on and off a few times and no issues. So the family and I went somewhere bout a 100 mile roundtrip and no problems. From stoplight to stoplight to running 75 to 80 on the interstate. Maybe a fluke? But I will be checking into a universal fuel injection fuel filter as well. I was unaware of a fuel injected one. On a different note , I did get some more goodies in the mail today.
