high reving when changing gears

Hi I have a 1990 festiva 1.3 5 speed manual trans. i just bought the car she runs like a top it has 240,000 on her I notice when i am changing gears either with the clutch or srynco shifting from 3rd to 4th or from 4th to 5th. The car with rev high more often when going form 4th to 5th.It will hit 4k then then come back down. when going from 3rd to 4th if i am shifting around 2.5 or 3 k it will rev up also but not as much. This also happens when i pull the car out of gear in 5th any ideas of why ?

The guy before me did adjust the idle on the car to it idles at about 1,200 now instead of 700

Is your 1990 a carbed car or efi?
i would look at the throttle cable and dashpot first. if the throttle cable is a bit sticky or the dashpot stiff it wont let the throttle back far enough when you let off the gas.

efi and i guess i have driven a lot of cars but i have never had one with a stiff gas pedal like this on i mean i drive truck for the army national guard and the pedal in the festiva is stiffer then my truck at the Amory

Then there is something wrong with the throttle cable, throttle body, or pedal pivot. Because they are usually very light. And, as ryan said, that is probably whats causing the throttle to not close completely between shifts.

That's not normal. I occasionally have a bit of a rev flare when I go to shift a gear but I'm sure it's my fault from pushing the clutch down and still having my foot on the gas maybe a little too much.

Ok, its probably a stiff cable. Disconnect it from the engine. Then see if the throttle valve on the engine is hard to turn. It should be. I think there is a stiff spring there, make sure it isnt broken.
Then make sure the pedal moves easy. If it does then the cable needs to be lubed. I would guess graphite lube

^^All Festivas after 1989 are efi. They introduced automatic transmission with efi half 'way through '89 because atuo transmissions are less fuel efficient so efi was needed to pass USA fuel economy regulations, roughly.

Right, i forgot somehow it was 89 rather than 1990 that they did that..

Don't forget to reset the idle with the base idle screw in the throttle body, and set the timing to 10* warm.

Check the routing of the throttle cable too, if it has too tight a turn, that would contribute to friction between the cable and its housing. Maybe squirt some cable lube in there.
