  • New clutch, Won't disengage. Where did I mess up?

Title says most, I put a clutch in today, and the pedal does nothing. i can hear the throwout bearing barely make contact with the pressure plate when I move the shaft the cable attaches to all the way to the end of it's travel. Did I miss something? I feel like a dope, I've done plenty of clutches but this is a new one on me.

Are you saying that you tightened the cable adjusting nut all the way in?

Shift linkage is connected properly right? Both bars bolted on there and it is for sure in gear?
How far do you have the cable adjusting nut tightened on the transmission fork? Should be able to have a bit of free play on that fork, nut cant be too tight. Take the spring off the fork so its easier to check freeplay. Then put spring back on.

Can you post a photo of how tight you have it?

No i put the clutch in, and when i was going to install the clutch cable to the fork i noticed it's just loose. The arm that attaches to the fork pivot is as free as they come, it's obviously not contacting the pressure plate. This is bypassing the cable/pedal mechanism, going solely by what I feel at the transmission. I installed the cable for the hell of it but the pedal just goes right to the floor.

So you were trying to disengage the clutch with just the arm that connects to the fork? Without using the cable and pedal? I have only been able to do it with a cheater bar when its not hooked up to the pedal.

I just did a toyota truck the clutch pedal was real free pulled the transmission out an where the clutch fork attaches to the bell housing on the inside there's a stud that screws in with a ball on the end of it the ball was broke off so the clutch fork had nothing to attach to.

did you possibly put the clutch disk in backwards it would cause those symptoms or the bolt that holds the fork to the clutch rod is missing

The throwout bearing can only be installed one way. Right?

sounds like disk plate in backward.

I'm pretty sure I installed the friction disc correctly. I guess i'll know when i have the transmission back out, Thanks for the thoughts y'all. I just wanted to see if anyone had run into a similar predicament before I pull this transmission back out. I really don't want to battle the sway bar again but looks like i'm stuck.

Here is a pic of both sides of the clutch disc.
Which one did you face forward?
The left hand disc or the right hand disc?

What was your trouble with the sway bar?

I'm a dope, the throwout bearing fell out in the grass when i was cleaning the transmission up. I had trouble putting it through the driver control arm with new bushings.

Oops... you found the bearing back though and its all good now?
I had trouble with that once as well. I think i took off the one front sway bar brace, put the foreward lca bushing on, put it through the lca, put the rear bushing on but still couldnt get the nut to start threading with the cup. So i tightened the nut onto the bushing with no cup for a ways. Backed it off, put the cup on and retightened.

Yeah bearing installed and i'm good as gold. I thought about doing it that way, i've done that on sway bar links on other vehicles before. i was having trouble getting the sway bar to go through straight to be able to line the rear bushing up with the bore in the lca. I he-manned it and got it after plenty of cussing. I just dropped the forward mounts to the core support and the spindle to strut mounts since i'd already replaced the bushings and i had enough clearance to slide the crossmember back. The new shifter linkage bushings installed as well, it shifts absolutely beautifully now.
