  • 89 non tach cluster t/ tach cluster wireing

okay so i have a 89 l and it does not have wireing for a tach cluster. so i put in a tach cluster and ran a wire from the neg coil to the back of the cluster and the tach works!........but the fuel and temp gauges dont.....so i unplugged it from the cluster and the temp and gas gauges works....but no tach of course...so my question is what am i forgetting? do i need to add another ground or what? and if i add a ground do i add it to the same screw the tach wire was on when it was working?

89 Festivas had wiring for tachs, even if they did not come with a tach from the factory. Check the yellow/green stripe wire. I know this for a fact, because I have an 89 wiring harness installed in my 93 Festiva.

Are you installing a orange tach. A white faced cluster may not work.

The connector and wiring should be directly behind the large square switch cover. The only wiring that is missing are the long three wire pigtails that go into the doors and up to the mirrors.

You can make your own pigtails to factory spec.

You can make any switch or cluster work by simply moving the terminals around in the connector.
Very easy to do with the proper terminal extractor. It will only take a minute.

Most people just cut wires and install butt splice crimp terminals because they have never figured out how to simply release the tang in the factory connectors.

Here's the 91 schematic. Compare it with the 89 schematic from the second post.

okay but i dont see how that helps with this specific problem. i just want a fix that works and it doesn't need to be clean. i already have a wire from the coil running through the fire wall.

Is there a yellow/green stripe wire in the C222 connector at location I?
That is where the tach pulse wire connects.

If you want I will swap you even my orange cluster for your white cluster
