  • Better valve springs

I recently replaced my valve seals and replaced my OE valve springs figuring they had about 200k on them and were probably weak, installed sealed power VS954's. Now it seems like when I get in the neighborhood of 4k rpm, I lose a lot of power - I am thinking valve float. What slight performance upgrade valve springs can I order - preferably by application - would 1.8 Protege springs work, or 1.6 Miata springs, some kind of KIA spring ? Or should I just put the OE springs back in? I am using an Aspire cam and rocker setup.

Since you have the old springs out of the engine why not test them? I don't know if there is any specs published by Ford nor do I have a factory service manual. I do know that there usually is a published figure that the springs should meet. In other words so many pounds at such and such height. Any good automotive machine shop should have a tester. Miata's and most Kia's are 16 valve so there would not be any possibilities of using them. You could probably use springs from a Mazda B6, 8 valve engine.
'88 Festiva LX 5 speed, A/C, Carb, restored $$$ body paint, badly wrecked @ 200k.
'93 Festiva L, 5 speed, Aqua, bought from the original owner,.Zero rust but very nasty otherwise. Awaits the B6T.
'91 Festiva L, 5 speed, bought to drive while putting the B6T in the '93. now B6ME powered.

I ended up putting the Aspire springs in and added damper springs from some cheap sealed power GM springs from RA.(wholesaler closeout) Works okay.
