  • Oil spray problem

As posted on FB, I just took 800 mile road trip in my little car.

Coming home, I was pushing it hard over the Shasta mountains, then decided to stop at the bottom of the mountain for lunch. Pulling off, I notice the oil pressure a bit low & the engine was ticking. Pulled into a parking lot & saw smoke. Seems it blew almost all of the oil out somewhere, but I couldn't find the source. So I wiped down what I could, added 3 qts of oil & got back on the freeway, babying it, eyeballing the oil gauge & stopping at almost every off-ramp to check. Never saw another problem. 100 miles later, I was back on it with the A/C on at 70mph for the rest of the trip home, just over 80 miles. Never had another problem.

Next day, I pressure washed the engine bay & drove it kinda hard for a few miles, & still no leak, but I did find the small breather hose was plugged, so I'm thinking maybe excessive crankcase pressure. But as Ryan pointed out, it never blew out the dipstick out, so maybe not.

Looking at the pics, it looks like the oil came from the distributor area. I pulled the cap after the wash, & found a small bit of oil inside, but definitely not the 3.5 quarts that it lost.

I should add that this engine has never burned a drop of oil since I have owned it, has very little blow by, & compression is very good. Anyone got any ideas??

Replace the distributor seal. Its $2 and super easy. They dry out and get super brittle. That couod be where it was from. Maybe its sealing worse than your dipstick and a littke bit of pressure blew it all out there

The outside O ring was replaced when I did the head gasket, but definitely worth checking again.

Is there a seal inside the distributor that could be bad? I have a spare in the garage I could always take apart and look.

It actually does look like it was sprayed by a spinning distributor!

Oh, ok. I dont kbow about a second seal, i dont think so.
Maybe buy a new oring, pull it out and check the bore on the head. Maybe it had junk in there that scored up the oring. Could clean with solvent if thats the case.
Because there is almost no way its your rear main seal. You would have lost your clutch if that much oil got on it.

Just an update... I have been driving the car daily for a week now. Last weekend I drove it to Good Guys in 100+ deg heat, about 40 miles one way. Not another drop of oil has been found. Dip stick still shows at the top.

Never got a chance to pull the distributor,, but I'm hoping I can pull it later this week. 3.5 qts of oil had to come from somewhere.
