  • starts then dies after 2secs.

I have a 91 festiva. It starts but then dies after about 2 seconds. I replaced fuel filter and fuel pump. Seems like a fuel problem. Any ideas?

I just did a search in the forums and found some useful info. Gonna check the vac and iac, mass air flow sensor, fuel/oxygen sensor, fuel pressure, and look for vacume leaks. Next time i will search the histories before i post. Sorry i'm new and navigating the site.

      At least you tried after....

That sounds like a vacuum leak to me but could be something different. Have you checked for CEL Codes?

you should have 30 psi at the fuel filter.

          Has the car ever run?

Are you sure its not spark?

The 2 second thing sounds like a vaf/intake tube leak.

You might have someone spray carb or throttle body cleaner into one of the small ports on the intake when you start it and see if you can keep it running - but still could be vacuum leak or VAF concern. May eliminate ignition concerns.

When mine did that it was the ignition control module. It was at a garage and the mechanic said that was what it was doing and suggested that might be why. I shopped around and got a new module and that fixed the problem. What was the engine doing before this happened? Was it stalling out and starting after the engine cooled down? Mine is carburetted but I think the icm problems and symptoms are the same.

Then the VAF may be stuck. The EFI fuel pump relay needs to see the VAF signal or else it shuts off the fuel pump after starting.

Yes, make sure something like A/F grit is not sticking the VAF closed, I've had this happen after changing air filter, car wouldn't idle - but could keep it running with a little throttle. I think mine was stuck part way open.
