Wheel bearing type noise, but no "play" in wheels

    You could try jacking up both front wheels, running the car up to the offending speed and listening to the bearings with a long thin screwdriver - put the tip against the inside of the knuckle and the handle up to your ear. You could listen to the rear this way also, but you would need to spin the wheel by hand.

      No difference in sound when gearbox in neutral.
      All four wheels cold after a freeway run.

      So I guess it's pretty conclusively a left side wheel bearing (either front or rear), so the easiest thing to do will be to replace the left rear bearing.

          I'd put my money on tire noise.
          '88 Festiva LX 5 speed, A/C, Carb, restored $$$ body paint, badly wrecked @ 200k.
          '93 Festiva L, 5 speed, Aqua, bought from the original owner,.Zero rust but very nasty otherwise. Awaits the B6T.
          '91 Festiva L, 5 speed, bought to drive while putting the B6T in the '93. now B6ME powered.
