  • Changing engine in Festiva, need advice

    Hey guys,

well after putting 2 crank seals in one week I give up,

have another festiva engine in my wreck parts car.
    runs mint and no leaks.

So I will put it in my ON THE ROAD festiva so I can stop brinigng it to mecanic every other day.

Question is, is this a big job swapping the engine?
    Things I need to know?
    do first?

My car is a 1992 Festiva automatic.

I dont want to start this with friends and be stuck somewheres so any help will do.

    thanks

Fix the crank seal. They sell a repair sleeve for the crank. Just slip it on and install the seal and no more leak.

buy the Chilton's manual for 20 dollars....it has engine removal and installation procedures. IMO i would change the seal too, i think you need a new mechanic.

just the sleave on it is used and the crank is compressing for some reason

              engine is shot

cause I drove it 10 miles dry

^^ like FestivaWES said ,buy a repair manual , they are worth their weight in GOLD.
Then you can look up other repairs as needed .

                    here's a starting tip

                    drain all the fluids
disconnect all electrical component's plugs and heater/coolant hoses, throttle cable.

Remove anything in the way that restricts the motor from coming out example battery coolant fans for more room if desired etc etc

Last Remove engine mounts, if taking out tranny at the same time undo axles, hook up hoist, or just do what i did lift it with your bare hands

                      thanks,

                      not taking out tranny

just taking another engine and putting it in

                      all in all
with 3-4 guys how long do you think this will take to turn the key?

If some of you are mechanically inclined , I would say a afternoon to swap a complete engine assy.
Unbolt ,pull it out put it in and hook everything back up
Make sure to mark all your hoses and connectors , it will make it easier to find where they go .

                          Here's a tip you won't read in a manual..

Manual calls for trans removal. If you are pulling the engine w/o the trans, re-installing can be a pita because the thin metal flex shield will hang on the pass side inner c/v joint.

Before you start, get under the car with a sharpie and mark the shield for clearance.. once the engine is out, you can grind the clearance needed. Believe me, this can be the difference of it going in in 15mins or 4 hours.

DJs right about grinding the tranny plate. And if you got 3 or 4 guys helping, it shouldn't take too long at all. My first swap was done over about 3 days time... last time I did it it took about 8 hours start to finish, by myself without any help (I have no friends :cry and that included rebuilding the cylinder head while I had the motor out.
                            No festiva for me ATM...

be easier to take engine and trans out
and re-do the hookup once its out???
