  • Sloppy gear box

my '91 festiva L has a 5-speed manual in it and 250k on the clock. when it is in gear the shift lever can be wiggled side to side about 4-6 inches. is this normal for a 5-speed. the 4 speed in my '89 had a really crisp, solid shift. can i adjust this? also, my gas tank leaks around the seam due to rust. i saw fuel tank repair kits at NAPA and was wondering if they work and how.

      Finding those bushing isn't easy.

Anyone have a source for them? I just got some from Ford yesterday, but I haven't had time to confirm it's the right thing. It looks wrong, but I'll find out tomorrow. These are hard plastic and it's a 2 piece. I could have sworn that bushing was rubber.

the last time i was at the scrapyard, the guy told me of a place that can make the bushings for the shift linkage, he said it makes them feel like new again, but i forgot the name of the place so i'll have to go back and find out

this is from the mx-6 forum:

Why is my shifter loose and feel very disconnected? Is this normal? What can I do to fix this? Can this be damaging to my car? Taken and editedfrom a previous post: THE SYMPTOMS: It will start out with a loose feeling shifter that has a lot of play and wiggles even while in gear. This will...

I've made bushings for 2 of my cars. Both times it was the bushing on the bottom of the shifter.
