My '90 Festiva, about 150k miles has started to have really STIFF steering. Some of that may just be the colder weather, but could it be a problem with the steering rack or ?? All comments appreciated.

Either when not moving or moving very slowly, like backing out of a parking space. It seems to steer harder than it used to. It is fine when up to speed, but when stopped, it steers like this old Plymouth that I used to have that had broken power steering.OnreeComment

if you don't have powersteering its probably an alignment problem. i would check all the ball joints and the tierods and make sure the front end isn't loose. then take it to your local alignment shop5 Festys and counting!!

Well, tonight after work I went to Wally-world and got new tires. They were the only place I could find with 12" tires.
It made a huge difference. Easier steering, better handling, everything just seemed quicker. The old tires had plenty of tread, but were about five years old.
