  • Axle removal---- HELP!

I have a 1988 festiva that the drivers side cv joint failed. Is there a trick to getting the axle to slide out of the transmission? The book says to use a pry bar but that is not working. Can anyone give me some advice?

Also, has anyone ever removed the emission system from one of these and if so how did it effect the carburetor and engine performance?

    Thank you very much
    Hopy-d

O.k. now to get both halfshafts back in???

I got both of the shafts out without ruining the tranny seals alright.
Now I'm having some major probs trying to get these llittle bastards back in.
Are there any tricks to getting the oem (I'm reusing them) circlips back on the axle shafts correctly (a special tool perhaps?) as well as the axles back inside the transmission?
It's as though the circlips need to be pryed closed somehow as the axles are being pushed in...but for the life of me i can't figure out how the #@*^ to accomplish this. Please, can one of you festive engine/drivtrain wizards let me in on the secrets to do this without tearing the seals all to hell?

        okeydokey then

I figure they both came out with a little persuasion so i'm sure that's what they'll need to go back in.
I tapped the passenger-side shaft in with a block of wood, after aligning it and sure enough it went in...just as planned and the seal still appears to be in good condition too.
The driver's side shaft is another story.
I lined it up and tapped with a mallet; just like I did with the other side except this just wouldn't go in...not even a little bit.
I removed the circlip from the shaft (just for shits and giggles) and decided to try again.
It wouldn't even go in without a circlip???
I gave the place a call that I got the shaft from and explained the situation. The shaft appears to be the wrong part...right part number, just that somewhere down the line, someone put the wrong part number on it.
The correct one will be here in the morning; so that i can button this thing up. The passenger-side is completed.
What a pain in the a$$. I guess it coulda been a lot worse, so I'll quit complaining now and tune up the lawn mower and BBQ grill instead
