  • Advancer Vacuum Hoses where to?

hi guys! need a little help here. I'm quite confused where to attached that 2 vacuum hoses for my distributor advancer. I have a carbed engine btw.

    Given:

    - My advancer(which is attached to the distributor) has 2 holes for hose attachments at the side. upper and lower.
    - Hose #1, already sucks air starting from/upon idle, where should i attach this?
    - Hose #2, sucks air when i only accelerate, where should i attach this?

Additional info on the theory behind this is also appreciated..

    thanks in advance guys....

Its to move the distributor ahead when you accelerate, just like if you were to loosen it for timing it and moved it forward and back, it gives it the extra punch it need to lunge forward. otherwise you would lag and stall and slowly deadly accelerate vs zoom your off, they will even kill and die if you step down on it and there was no advance, the old distributor's the whole thing moved forward and back and you could see it, now days its inside the distributor that moves and you can't see it/

Just hook the hoses up and you will know right away if you have them on right or backwards, they are spark advancers, vacuum controlled by the volume of air pulled from the carb and manifold, when you step down on the gas the air pressure builds(sucks), when your speed catches up the pressure lessenes and the distributer goes back in place, it moves the inside about a half an inch and it does this quickly just like the foot feed itself. it goes to normal when you are at a steady speed.

Hey guys, just would like to confirm. What's are the functions or difference between the upper port(hole) and the lower port(hole) of the advancer shown above?

      thanks in advance

Don't know if this helps but when checking timing you're supposed to remove the upper hose and plug it with a golf tee. I use that hose when I want to hook up my hand held vacuum guage to diagnose engine problems. If the needle is unsteady it usually means its time to wipe down the ignition wires again (missing).

          okey.... followup question..

Where should i connect the port(venturi?) vacuum? (sucks air upon accelaration)
Where should i connect the manifold vacuum? (sucks air upon idle)

Tom already explained it above, but just would like to know where it was initially connected at factory.

I can feel where they go on my car but I don't have a digital camera to take a photo. If everything else is connected then there should only be two choices, both on the driver's side of the intake manifold as far as I can tell. As a previous poster suggested, try one way, then the other, to see which works. They only work when the engine is cold and the O2 sensor has not warmed up enough to start sending a signal to the computer. Once that happens the computer takes over adjusting the spark advance.

The Haynes manual doesn't have any photos which show where these hoses go. I took a look at the car again today and here's the best directions I can come up with. Hope they work.

Bottom hose on distributor: black with red dashed stripe.
Look for nut on back of air cleaner housing holding housing to wire bracket. Follow bracket down to bolt holding on lower end of bracket. Hose goes on metal tube directly in front of bolt.

Top hose on distributor: black with label "CG*8K".
Find rectangular pressure sensor mounted on firewall directly behind pluse air regulator on driver's side of air cleaner housing. Follow pressure sensor vacuum hose from T-connector down under fuel pump. Distributor vacuum hose goes on outlet immediately to passenger's side of outlet to which pressure sensor vacuum hose is connected.

              Good luck.

i have a problem in that i dont remember which lines hooked up where after doing some head work last week... its the 3 lines that come out of the metal box on the side of the intake right above the carb... not exxactly sure as to what the box is as this is my first carbed car.... any help on those lines would really help. also there was a line i found back between the intake manifold and firewall that was plugged with a bolt and didnt seem to have anywhere to go.....

That box is the pulse air system used by Ford. Assume you are thining of small vaccum lines, not the two large diameter hoses?
