  • Transaxle lubrication

I got a question regarding the transaxle lubrication. The guy helping me rebuild my 5 speed is suggesting that I use about a third to half of 75W80 (fairly light) gear lube. He thinks the ATF was used to help with mileage and isn't the best choice for minimizing wear. The feeling is in a colder climate you might want all ATF but in the Mid-Atlantic states, the mix will be better. Anybody here have any knowledge along these lines?

I would not mix the 2
Most here recommend ATF , I had mine rebuilt in Nov. 05' at a tranny shop and they also recommend ATF , and that's what I had out in , never had a problem

Any technical reason for not mixing the two? What he is saying makes some sense, but like you are thinking who knows what happens when the two of them (ATF and gear oil) get together. I think I'm going to disregard his suggestion and change it every time I do the timing belt (60K). ATF isn't that expensive and they do give you a nice drain plug (filling it up isn't quite as easy as it could be, but that is why they make those 'super funnels'). Besides, it all about the mileage - right?

Me thinks you have made a wise choice sticking with the ATF!
I personally think the ATF is used for heat transfer rather than milage!
But I have no real proof of that!

The tranny in my 88 had no problems till about 400,000 miles when the syncros realy started to show some wear, but I didn't change it out until it had 460,000 miles on it.
I would stick with the ATF.

I cannot find the transmission dipstick. Is there one? How do I get the Transmission fluid in my 88 manual transmission?

It is where your speedo cable go's in the tranny , you pull it out to fill , you need a long funnel and it has a full mark on the housing when you pull it out .
