Mazda 121 (Bubble) B3 1.3L 16v SOHC (Auto). - Horsepower?

Hi All,
I was recently back home in the UK (now in Virginia) and the downpipe on the 121 started blowing.

Now I've had an endless and fruitless journey of trying to source reasons why this little car feels like 45hp and does 24mpg :evil:

You can read numerous posts about this in other parts of the forums.

Anyway.....when i was trying to source a new downpipe (header pipe?) I was looking at the manuals and noticed the 121 B3 engine varies from 53 to 73hp???

What could possibly be done to this engine to make it 53????

I mean in the early 1980's a Japanese 1200cc 8v engine would easily produce 55hp?

I'd like to know - 'cos our 121 must be the 53hp variant!!! :cry:

I'm flying home friday night - any words of wisdom - have packed a set of Platinum Spark Plugs from Walmart and Duralast wireset from Autozone!

Cool, I take it those are different from what you have available back home .

Yup - not seen any platinum plugs here at all for this car, I've always used the NGK plugs that could be sourced here - I've bought a set for kia/mazda based applications - but I'll need to verify that the heat rating etc works out fine for the car.

Wiresets are just cheaper in the US compared to the UK hence the decision to replace them as well

Well the new wireset and plugs made not a bit of differnece to the slug....
