  • Smoking problem

The car is a 91L FI 5 speed. I have owned it for the last 6 years and it has never smoked...still runs strong...has 160,000 on it. Just recently it had been sitting for a little bit while I was driving the silver festy. The red one had an oil pan leak also, so another reason I was not driving it. Afetr I hit the deer I had to start driving the red one so I was off a few days and replaced the oil pan gasket. All went fine. But when I started it up after a couple of days of sitting....it smoked when I took off...went through the gears and it stopped. It does not smoke any more then that, but now after it has been sitting overnight or during the work day...when I first start it and take off it puffs smoke..... then it is fine after that. Any clues as to what could be causing this would be greatly appreciated

Valve seals and guides will do that , I have never really heard of anyone here having a valve seal problem , like GM did back in the mid to late 80's.
They get hard and crack , then as it sits overnight the oil seeps down into the combustion chamber , smoke's on start up , then when it is burnt off the smoke is gone .

Also if the oil is broke down , like way past the due date ,it will do it too.

Too much oil will make the smoke , there have been a few on here with that problem .

i would also say valve seals/guides
if it was piston rings it would happen all the time, but like packrat said, could also be as simple as too much oil

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

mine has done this before from too much oil like packrat said. it's also has done it one other time when it was idling for almost an hour and then got driven at higher speeds. both times it only lasted a short amout of time then went away. hope this helps some.

By pouring in new oil you may have rinsed away the crud that was sealing a cracked valve seal...
