    Working on an 89 festy L, carb'd
    When I opened the timing cover, the cam gear retaining bolt was broke and the little dowel pin that holds it in place was also sheared. I removed the remnants alright, but I can't seem to find a replacement for the dowel pin. Dealer says it's obsolete, so now I'm desperately trying to locate a suitable substitute.
    I have 2 more Festy's in the back yard and tried to remove the pin from one but there is not much to hold on to. The other one has :shock: the same problem.
    If I have 2 like that, I bet some of you have also had the problem.
    Where do I find an exact replacement without replacing the whole cam?(like the dealer suggested)
    or...
    Ideas for reliable substitutes available to the backyard mechanic on a budget.

    maybe try a engine rebuild/machine shop, they should have something.

      If you don't need to worry about damaging the seal or the parts engine camshaft, heat the camshaft with a torch on both sides of the pin from about the 10 o'clock to the 2 o'clock position. You can pull it out easily with a pair of vice grips. I know 'cause I just tried it.

        running again!

        Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the machine shop. Two sizes; 5/16 and 1/4''. He recommended tapping larger hole. After further insp. of the cam I found a crack parallel to the dowel hole in the camshaft. (that must have been some force...odd that there was no noise when it broke.)
        Anyway, we ground the threads off a 6mm setscrew, pinned the gear with it, torqued it down, and put her back on the road.
        Seems to do fine, but will post update if it proves unreliable.
        I cant drop $100 on a cam now.
        My repair cost: setscrew=45cents, gas to nearest place with metric ANYTHING=$10
        (gas to machine shop and back=$30)
