The axles are fine. I'm not thinking it's the cable, it feels like it might be the clutch cable. what should I look for when pushing in the clutch?

OK, new Idea! It's the CV joint I'm 90% sure. If the car is in gear, and the car is on, the axle on the passenger side is spinning freely but no moving the tire! That's the CV right?

That is very possible , is the axle spinning all the way to the boot , but not past the boot .
Which side is spinning while in gear , pass or driver side ?
If it is for sure the CV , you can just get a complete axle assy ..Reman with a lifetime warranty .
Easier to do a complete axle than trying to fix a CV .------------------------------------------------
