  • Screeching Sound...

    Hello,
My new Festy is great (after the new alternator and wheel bearings), but recently has been making an extremely noticable "screeching" sound. It doesn't happen all the time, just occasionally, and usually goes away after a couple of minutes. After stopping the car and putting it in neutral, I pressed the gas and the sound got louder with the amount of pressure. The sound stops with no gas, or when the clutch is in. Its not constant, but I'm afraid it might get there at one point. Does anyone have an idea as to what this might be? bad? not so bad? Any help would be appreciated, cause if that noise starts occuring again when I'm going 65/70, I think I'll just open the door and jump out on the highway and take my chances there... :x (picture fingernails on a chalk board, except way louder  )

My first guess would be loose alternator belt....

If it isn't doing it when you press the clutch, throw-out bearing?

I'm with Ian on this one, especially if it is intermittent, probably either a loose belt, or some oil got on the belt and its slipping
        No festiva for me ATM...

Yep alternator belt slippage. Either the alt belt is loose or needs replacing ir it could be the alternator is getting bad. It's probably just the belt.

            Belts chirp, bearings squeal.
If it sounds like a bird it's most likely a belt.
If it sounds like a cat is more likely a bearing.

Thx. I hope its just the belt slipping because I just replaced the alternator and front bearings! (the back ones seemed fine when we replaced the front)

If you just changed the alt then I would suspect the belt tension. Did you replace the belt when you replaced the alt?

Yes, I also replaced the belt. But I will check the tension once I get a chance today.

Not the throwout bearing won't here while driving. Only sitting still with clutch pedal pushed in
