  • Speedometer repair question

I want to separate my speedometer head from it's face plate. I assume the two screws in the face have to come out, and the needle needs to come off. My question: how do I get the needle off, and will it then go back on? I'm assuming just pull it (carefully) to remove, and push it(carefully) to get it back on. Is that correct?

(Why? I've sprayed graphite in it a couple times and I want to clean the numbers on the odometer displays, plus want to try lubricating it more carefully. The noise and jumping is driving me nuts in the cold weather...)

Should be a plastic push on kind of needle. There's actually a tool for this, but I've used a regular old dinner fork for the purpose.

A fork did the trick! And, although it's too early to say for sure, it seems that I've fixed the damn thing. Hosed it out with carb cleaner, let it dry, and then hosed the works down with spray silicone. No noise on a short test drive

The noise and jumping is caused by cable needing cleaning and lubed, pull cable clean and lube with graphite, don't use oil or grease

^^ mine ended up being the actual speedometer too like dave g. lubing the cable did no good. the cluster had been sitting in a jy for a while and must have dried out some. only made noise and jumped when very cold also.

No, the cable is fine, and properly lubricated. The problem is (was, I hope!) in the head.

Ive had the exact same thing on my car. I thought it was the cable and after pulling it and re lubeing it a few times I realized it was the speedo head. Only happened when it was cold out for some reason.
