  • How do I Adjust the Odometer to Match Current Cluster?

So here is the deal. I have a white faced tach cluster that I would like to install on my 1991 L. My car has 362,000 miles showing and I would like to run up the tach cluster's current odo reading to match. I have had it apart to take a look, but I did not mess with it for fear of screwing it up.

How difficult is it to adjust up the odometer? Anyone have a How-to or tips for this? Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, there's two ways to do this. Find a way to hook an electric drill up to the speedo (through the cable or otherwise) and run it for a couple of days at top speed. Or...see if the odometer sections can be swapped from one to the other. I've done the swap in some cars when doing a cluster switch.

I have pulled them apart numerous times.. You just have to be super careful with the odo bracket. (keeps the # wheels together) It is plastic and will break. I used a hairdryer to warm it up first so the little keeper pieces wouldn't break. once apart, rearrange to the right #s and put it all back together.

Or take it to a speedo/clock repair and let them do it.

practice changing the OD on your (more or less worthless) stock cluster first, then try it on the tach if it works!

If you find a place that does this legally, I'd be amazed since it's a Federal Crime to tamper with any odometer in the US.

It's a crime to turn them back; I seriously doubt it's a crime to set a new one to match the old

From what I understand, the fed has no distinction between the 2. If I'm proven wrong, I stand corrected.

The place I sent my truck speedo to was going to sell me a new one and set the mileage to match the old one.

I changed the one in my elcamino to one with a tack/clock,Took it to a place called A&B speedometer, they repaired the clock and turned the speedo back to the mileage of the old one.

Well ya know if you think about it, putting in a new instrument that read zero would be about the ultimate "turning back"

see i understand that rolling back an odo is illegal as it is usually done for fraud, but if you drop a new motor in why cant we change the spedo to the miles of the new motor? or same with new cluster, this is bugged me forever, maybe someone should email the police dpts or highway patrol to ask, hmmm ill do that when i get home. gotta go to school now cya later
