lock cylinder housing removal

Any clues on how to get this off?



The method shown in the manual is a joke, as least its not working for me.



Seems like these would have a hex head or a place for an alan wrench or a screw driver or something. The attaching screw are round and smooth ?
Will it come off w/o the steering column ?

It looks like they use needle nose vise grips.

I know, I think it shows at least that they have a good sense of humor. I tried that just for a good laugh it was pretty funny but it doesnt work.

Is it possible to drill out the screws then replace them?

Hit the top of the screws wit the sharp cold chisel to make a screwdriver groove. Or if you have a small dremel you can also make a groove. Then unscrew.

I thought about getting the four inch grinder out and grinding the top off the screw but there is a raised area around the screws so that you cant get to the screw. If I sawsall off the screw where the two halves join I wont have enough remaining screw to grab on to screw it out of the bottom half. I thought for a while maybe there is a locking mechanism that locks the steering column when you remove your keys, I tried the key in several positions nothing. My cold chisel is too large I think I'm going to borrow a small one from my bro and see if I cant get it started by driving the chisel into the side of the screw counter clock wise and see if it wont loosen. Might also have to drill top of screw off then put vise grip on what left of the screw in the bottom half. Figured someone had done this and there is a simple trick. Guess this part wasn't make to come off. I do have a small die grinder that would probably make a slot for a screw driver :idea:

my friend had to take out his lock cylinder before and the screws were the same as what we have, the locksmith said they are shear-off screws, i guess in the factory when they put the lock cylinders in the screws do have a hex head and when they get to the right torque the top shears off, i think it's for some kind of anti-theft, but anyway what the locksmith did was cut a groove in the top of it and turned it out with a flat screwdriver

I dont see how it could be an anti theft deal. There is only one screw holding the ignition switch in the lock cylinder. Onces that is out you could start the car with your finger nail, or a jumper wire. Think Im going to have to cut a groove in it for a slotted screw driver.

i think it could be anti-theft only because you wouldn't be able to use a screwdriver take everything apart to steal it, (i haven't heard that from anyone i'm just assuming) like what you need to do is cut a groove in it in order to take it out, or vice-grips like what the instruction say

A) vise grips
B) cut a slot and unscrew
C) center punch and drill out the heads

I usually go for option A or C. Did one of these at the wreckers last week with a cordless drill. It takes a while.

I used a cold chisel and a heavy hammer and bashed the crud out of it till it fell apart on one of my festiva's I will probably remove it on my pimptiva to, so I can be truley keyless :-)

Cutting a slot with the mini cutting wheel did the trick.





Now I can start any festy just unplug the three black connectors and plug my three in and Im off. Better start bringing them in at night :lol:

i was gonna say, who on earth would steal a festiva? but now i know, somone who knows their potential

P.S. If they are screws without heads.. how did they get them in to begin with?
