  • New guy here....I have a question

So I just got an 88 Festiva LX in immacualte condition. Only problem I'm having with it is when I'm accelerating and go to second (or third and sometimes starting out in first) gear it goes, but then starts jumping/bucking around mid-throttle. If I push the gas farther or to the floor it goes away. Any ideas what this could be? The car is a 5-Speed and its carburated. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If it is doing it only at light throttle and your able to push past it , it might be that the accelerator pump in the carb is shrunk or is worn out. Was the car owned by a old person or sitting for a wile before you bought it?

I with joes91fest on this one!
I had a late 70's civic that did that!
Changed the accelerator pump and problem solved!

Would the accelerator pump also be called a Secondary Throttle Diaphragm? Thanks!

A lot of us have posted on this one before. It seemed as though no one had a solution for this surging/pulsing. Maybe this old thread is the solution? How do I go about replacing the accelerator pump in the carb? Anybody repair/replace it to get ride of the bucking bronco?

if i'm not mistaken, the STD is the actuator for the secondary throttle plate. the accelerator pump sprays directly into the main throttle venturi and is on the pass. rear side of the carb held in by 4 phillips screws.

Can I buy this part at an autoparts store, or is this a junkyard trip? Or does anyone have one available? I'd love to get rid of the bucking.

Anyone have any pictures or detailed directions on how to change it out?

should still be able to get a rebuild kit for these, they look like a common accel pump design.

Put a yellow bottle of Heet in the gas for $.99 before you do anything!

All the auto parts places can get a carb rebuild kit, they may have to order it. About $30.00. Worn out O2 sensors cause wierd problems too. about $18.00. Four screws on right rear of carb. can be replaced with carb in place.
