  • Gasket or Goop?

Need to know if the cover that's behind the timing belt uses a gasket or goop. This is the casting that has the water outlet on the front side of the engine.

I'm looking to replace the front main crank seal, and need to know if I need to order a part or not. Anything else in there I need be concerned with?

    Thanks guys,
    Jim

The metal plate behind the timing belt doesn't make a seal, so no gasket or compound. The plastic parts that go over the timing belt make a seal with a gasket, but it isn't a critical seal so it's fine leaving it out.

Aside from the front main the only gaskets I can think of on that part of the engine are the waterpump gaskets.

when i replaced the front crank seal the kit from AZ had the waterpump gaskets and stuff with it... i didn't use them, but i have needed some of them from time to time. i wouldn't by anything besides the crank seal till you know if your new seal comes with the extra gaskets or not.

i'm not realy sure what part your taking about exactly but i'm guessing like oxbrain said unless its part of the water pump you shouldn't need to replace any gaskets.

I got the whole upper/head gasket set, which included the water pump gasket for some reason. I figured that there must've been some kind of gasket behind that plate as it "appears" the water jacket runs through it.

But, since you say there's no gasket or seal there, then WOOHOO for me. One less thing to worry about!

Thanks for the information. I still love this site.

Checked the service manual. It looks like the thing I thought was a cover is just part of the water pump. Cool.
