  • no go...carb issue

ok. 88 festy carbed, 4 spd. it seems to get no fuel into the carburetor except when you pump the accelerator. then it runs, but only as long as you gun it. does anyone know anything about this carburetor? and can you even get any parts for it? we changed the O2 sensor and fuel pump recently. help would be greatly appreciated.

prolly need a new accelator pump, id just rebuild it tho, i can get a rebuild kit at my local advance for around $30. thats always my first step when working on a carb, is to rebuild it.

also pull the needle valves out and make sure there still pointed and such. ill look at my manual later to see if it covers the carb and if so ill scan it for ya.

What diagnostic procedures have been tried?
Tried disconnecting the fuel line at the carburettor and turning the engine over with the starting motor to see if fuel is flowing (into a jar)?
Checked the fuel filtre (low on the driver's side fire wall)?

        I agree with WmWatt.
My guess would be fuel filter, fuel pump, trash in the tank or trash in the carb (in that order).

well we got it working with the o2 sensor (finally got it in, we stripped it pulling it out) but it still has some accel. issues. if i'm driving down the road and i put the gas on the floor, it hesitates a second, and then picks up and goes. not the accel. pump, we checked that, its working fine. it also bucks slightly immediately after you come out on the clutch in all gears, but worst in second. we checked the manual and it said there is a way to test the stuff connected to the computer thing (cant remember what its called). you're supposed to connect a voltmeter to the computer. does anyone know where this connector is?

The connector is in the engine compartment on the driver's side, a milky white plastic colour. You need an analogue VOM with the needle, not a digital VOM. The instructions and codes in the Haynes manual are good.

You also migh have a slightly clogged enrichment valve circuit
in the carp, adds more gas under demand.

a low float level can also make it act like that.

                rebuilt the carb lately?

never been rebuilt, and the float level is fine.

Wouldn't hurt for a quicky cleanout with a couple cans of carb spray,
or get the gallon can and soak proper and put the rebuild kit in, watching that none of the smalle passagways are clogged.

Also, doublecheck your timing, if its retarded too much, or the
advance springs are rusty in the distributor, can cause that

Put a yellow bottle of Heat in your gas (99cents)

1/2 or 1/4 of a drop of water in your fuel can cause this.

                      Winter and summer!

                      Fact!

A trace of water in your fuel is the same thing as a tiny ball bearing, gas is thinner than water. The water can't pass through the jets.
