I have an 88' with a 5 speed manual. It recently puked.
Got a different one today out of an 87' in good shape.
Haven't had time to look at it too close but did notice that
where the speedo cable connects to the tranny, the 87' has
some electrical connections where the 88' does not. Can anyone tell
me what they are? And also what type of connectors, that are weather
proof, do you prefer to splice electrical wires back together?

    thanks, sam

for the weather proof splices, id go get some crimp on butt connectors and use them but also look for liquid electrictal tape. that seems to be pretty decent, its in a can like rubber cement and has a brush attached to the lid, thats what i would do but when it comes down to it its all what you trust lol. gl on the tranny man.

If it is in line with the speedo cable it is part of the Ford Cruse Control.
And Horseplay25 is needing that part for his.
If you can get a picture I can tell you for sure if it is or not.
You can remove it and connect the speedo cable like normal.

Yes, take a picture if possible. It might be a cruise control sensor! I am sure we can identify it for you.

ok......that makes sense it being something with a cruise control. I did take it off and the speedo cable hooked right up. The only reason I thought it was an 87' is that is what was written on the windshield at the junkyard. I'm such a crappy mechanic though......I got the new tranny into the car but before I got everything completely hooked up, I just didnt think that the clutch was engaging properly. So I had the bright idea of starting it up and just let it idle and see what was up. Well, that turned out not to be such a good idea. I think if a person does that, that the transaxles need to be in. It was good for 30 seconds or so then it sounded like I dropped a handful of metal into a blender. I dropped the tranny again and sure enough it ground up something inside. There might be a chance that I can get it together with parts from the old one. Anyway keep your eyes open. I might just get to the point soon where I post that the first person here can haul it away. I live in Michigan about 50 minutes north of Grand Rapids. Out of all the cars I've ever owned this was my favorite.

well.......I was able to take the two transmissions and put together a good one. You can't start the car without the driveaxle on the drivers side installed. There is a planetary gear that will explode.
I got the new tranny installed but the clutch wont work properly. It's like the thowout bearing comes up against the pressure plates but wont depress them.
The clutch had recently been changed by the previous owner so I just left it the same.
Maybe something froze up on it when the tranny went out.
                any thoughts??
thanks for any help..........looks like I take the tranny out again.......

My guess would be that you don't have the throwout bearing installed correctly on the clutch fork. The bearing is probably in front of the fork making the clutch come out of gear almost before you even touch the pedal. That means a transmission removal again.
                  You gonna race that thing?

actually I think I have found the problem. I know I have the throwout bearing in right.
I stopped at a guys place I know, who has a Festy. We went out to look at it and when
you push on the lever that controls the throwout, it feels just like mine does. I noticed yesterday
when I was messing with it that up under the dash where the clutch cable connects to the pedal
that a fitting on the cable is supposed to fit in a bracket. Mine was not in properly but I thought it
problably was the way it always has been. Now that I think about it, it probably came out during
the time I replaced the tranny. I think it must be in this bracket to get the proper leverage.
anyway..I'm anxious to see if it works

also found another Festy for $450.........bodys nice and it runs good

                    thanks, sam

ok.........the problem was the end of the clutch cable not installed properly in the bracket above the pedal.
                      works muy perfecto ahora.
should be back on the road again at 42mpg next week.

as long as I didn't mess with the tierod ends the allignment should remain
                      the same shouldn't it??

                      thanks for the help

Do you have the small thing you removed still? What are you doing with it? If its a Ford cruise control sensor I would be interested in it.
