OK here's the deal. Today I took a trip to Denver from Colorado Springs to visit my dad. The cars has never had any problem while I drove the distance. Well after I arrived in Denver and after I picked my dad up the car started dieing every time I came to a stop. It felt like it wasn't getting enough gas. So I just drove home dieing at every stop. It would start right up. I got home and I started it and it barely kept at idle. I noticed it was leaking gas from the mechanical fuel pump. It has been smelling like gas for awhile but I could never find any leaks or or spots under the car. Today it was very noticeable. So is there a way to just fix the pump or is my only option to replace it all together?

Okay I installed it and it seemed snug and everything but when I start it, it does the same thing as it did earlier. If I keep the accelerator down a little bit it stays started but as soon as I come to a stop it dies. Could I have installed it incorrectly? Could the filter need to be replaced? I recall replacing it about half a year ago though. Is there another filter or screen somewhere that is clogged? I'm just really frustrated as I have no more daylight and my mom has work tomorrow and I am leaving until Wed.

The leak in the old fuel pump could have been a symptom rather than the problem. Suppose the fuel line were clogged and the pump was sucking harder than it's diaphragm could handle and developed a leak. If you still think it's a fuel problem you might want to trace further back along the fuel line looking for a problem.Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.

Check all your vacuum hoses that connect to either the intake manifold or carb. Especially check the pcv hose - that's the one that plugs into the top of the valve cover and is connected to the intake manifold. A vacuum leak will not allow the car to idle because it is getting too much air and not enough gas. If you can't find any vacuum leaks and the car runs normally except at idle, crank the idle speed up a little. There is a little plastic knob on the left side (as you face the carb) that has what looks kind of like gear teeth on it. Grab hold of this knob with your fingers and turn it until the engine speed increases to where it won't stall.You gonna race that thing?

Okay I noticed when I was replacing the filter that gas was spewing every where because of gravity. So I don't think it's clogged from the filter to the tank. Although when I replaced the pump I noticed that I didn't have to plug any of the lines. No gas was leaking from any of them. Could something has passed through the filter and clogged any of those lines?
