  • Tranny swap problems! can you help?

So finally after 2 months damkid and I got together to pull the tranny from the aspire. after all is said and done were trying to pull the other axel out of the good tranny when we noticed that the tranny had a crack where the pry bar was. now my question is can I unbolt the casing from the bad tranny and swap it to the good one, or is there a lot of internals to mess with? any help would be great I will try and get some pics thanks
Wait what kinda car is that!!! Oh yeah thats a ASPIRE

You should be able to swap cases without any problems.

Undo all those 10 mm bolts and the bell housing separates from the transmission. Everything is bolted down so nothing will fall off.

Should be pretty easy to do. When I pulled my bad transmission apart it took 5 minutes, and probably not much longer if I wanted to put it back together.

        That was my problem too.

Taking apart the transmission didn't help.

What I eventually did was get a hammer and chisel and hammer where the axle met the the transmission. It's hard to explain, but the chisel acted as a wedge and popped the axle out.

Air hammers and prybars didn't work.

well i have 2 trannys the good one with the cracked case and the bad one with shot internals. i think it would just be easier and cheaper to unbolt and swap?

Yes, that's the easiest way to go.

You don't even need to remove the axle providing it's stuck in the good transmission.

the axle needs to come out because it was cut when i went and picked up the car the tranny came out of. but i do like the chisel and hammer idea

there is another trick to get a stuck axle out if the other axle is removed. Shine a flash light in the hole where the other axle was and see if you can see the end of the stuck axle. You should be able see it, as well as a round bar that blocks you from touching the center of the axle, but that is no big deal. Grab a large screwdriver and a hammer. push the screwdriver through the opening where the other axle was, and place the screwdriver against the stuck axle end. Now hit the other end of the screwdriver with a hammer. it may take a couple of hits, but when it comes loose it will pop completely out of the transmission. Snap-on has a specialty tool to do this, but it is $60, and a screwdriver works just as well.

me and a friend of mine tried that before i took the tranny up to him and still couldn't get it, but at the same time we broke the hammer prying on the axle so we were hitting the screwdriver with a pipe wrench
