    I noticed some connectors near the brake booster on the firewall. Is there a diagnostic unit that will plug into these? Or is it for a sensor/accessory that isn't used?


    My 88 Grand Marquis had the EEK diagnostic system, but then again that was MPI and not carb'ed.

    Maybe I'm just an idiot, but I'd like to see if there are any codes in this baby.

    I don't think they are for diagnostic just other accessories our cars didn't get. Maybe for the A/C? I have had those connectors free on all my cars ;-)

      Not for A/C. I saw one of them connected to something on a Pride, trying to remember what... :scratch:

        Those are "self-test connectors" as described by the Electrical and Vacuum trouble-shooting manual that I have from Ford. One of them is a Fuel Pump Self-test connector on the EFI cars, not sure on the carbed models. I know that one of the other connections will give you your tachometer pulse.

          You can read the engine codes off those connectors with an analogue volt meter, as described in, for example, the Haynes manual where both the procedure and codes are listed.

          I assume they are also used for online engine diagnosis but don't have the manual here with me and don't remember the details.

          The early Festivas predate the engine diagnostic standards. I don't know if or when the later models conformed.

            you can retrieve any stored trouble codes by jumping 2 terminals of that connector. the "check engine" light will flash a series of short and/or long pulses that give you a numerical value that corresponds to a suspected faulty sensor. the haynes manual details this procedure and provides a chart to interpret the code and for clearing the check engine light.

              One of them is used when adjusting the engine timing per the Ford/Hayness manual.
              It is has to be grounded before setting the timing.
