  • B6 setup and fuel mileage.

First of all, the specs: 92 Festy, 87 323 B6 w/ proper injectors, 92 323 ECU, Festy VAF. Timing has not been set yet.

So, I've got the B6 in the car, and it runs like a hot-damn, but there's a problem. I've noticed that until the car gets completely warmed up, it idles at almost 2000rpm. Once it's warmed up, it's idling at around 1000, which is a little on the high side.

I've also noticed some pretty bad gas mileage so far. I poured $20 into the tank 3 days ago, and it's almost gone. I know I've put some mileage on, but not enough to drink that much. I've noticed it's running a bit rich, as well, but not so much as it really stinks like gas; just enough to dirty up the inside of the tailpipe.

What I need then is some advice on setup. Can getting the timing setup affect the gas mileage or idle very much? Is the fact that I'm using the Festiva VAF, as opposed to the 323 VAF having some consequence?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

timing has alot to do w/ your mileage on festies, plus there's an idle air adjustment on the TB that will fix the high idle issue. stock B6 motors are to be timed @ 6* BTDC and should idle @ 650 when warm. somewhere in the custom engine forum there's a thread about leaning out the fuel via adjustment of the VAF spring. i DO recommend the FMS sport cam, it really wakes up the engine. just make sure your valve springs are in good shape and don't rev past 6500 unless you upgrade those springs or put in lighter valves (or both).

Edit: here's the thread i'm talking about http://www.fordfestiva.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11500

Cool, thanks. I'm going to attempt getting the timing setup tonight. As for the cam, that's on my list of things to get this year.
