Anyone removed an inner tie rod with the rack still on?

Has anyone removed an inner tie rod (where it screws into the steering rack) with the rack still on the car?

I have read everything I can find, and I see a lot of references to a pin that needs to come out, but I don't see the pin. What does this "pin" actually hold or keep from turning? I'm asking because I don't see any space on the new rods I got to put a pin.

Also, any general tips for getting a wrench up in there to turn this thing without taking the rack off? I tried a small pipe wrench, but there is very little maneuvering room in there.

I did the passengers side without any problem. Just used a big crescent wrench.
