  • Front seat swap

I tried to swap the front seats from a 1989 auto into a 1990 five speed and noticed they mount differently. Just wonder if anyone else has discovered this and what they did about it. Three of the holes line up ,I guess Ill have to fab a bracket for the fourth hole. Don't know if you can swap the seat tracks out or not.

It's because of the brackets for the manual/auto seatbelts. They were different.

Seat tracks are tack welded on, if you're handy with a welder you can mount any seat you want on them.

I put a '92 GL seat in my '89L and just left the 4th bracket hanging.

My car is a 1990 and had auto belt seats. I have my carpet out right now and i believe the bolt holes are there for the manual belt seats. Its the back inside mount thats different, correct? Ill have to go look. I know the bolt holes are there for the manual belts, i already got those in.

correct, its not even close. Here is an old 91 seat in an 1989. You can see the red seat mounting bolt on the car and the difference to the back hole in the seat track.

I'm afraid if I don't fab a bracket the seat will sag in the back corner and tweak the track so that the seats wont adjust.

I got the older to newer or the newer to older seat swap figured out. If any one ever wants to know. You just need a couple of seat/seat belt bracket off of a parts car w/o the seat belt retractors.

But you have to also swap out these things.

          And make one of these

          Cut a little carpet.

          Works great

Thanks fresh, I'll read this tomorrow when I can get my head around what's going on. It sounds like the brackets are already there to mount a newer seat to an older car?

So the list above of things you need.... is that to swap a newer seat into an older car or an older seat into a newer car?

What do I need to swap GL seats into my 89 L?

I would think swapping out the seat frame/tracks would work, esp. since we can swap in so many other seats from Aspires, Escorts, 323s, etc.

Just reverse the process. Im about to do that very thing on the car this thead was about. Ill be taking out the old (88-89) seats and putting in a sport interior. Ill document the process if you want .
