  • ATX Starter Heat related problem

I put a new starter on Luxstiva a month or so ago because the old one went kaput. My new starter worked fine until the weather got hot. Apparently, when the car gets hot it affects the starter solenoid, which then just clicks. After a while, maybe a few clicks or maybe ten or fifteen minutes, it will finally start.

Anyone got a way to fix this without trying another starter? This is a first time problem like this for me.

Isn't the starter under warrenty? Take it back and get another one, I have had new starters go bad before.

I actually have the same problem with my auto car. I figured that it was just going since it is old but I guess I will find out when I finally get it back on the road.

My old one "went." That is, it quickly became useless, even after tapping, etc. This new one seems to act up only when hot. I'll see about taking it back. I suppose some new ones may be more susceptable to "heat stroke."

        Thanks guys!

i worked at a garage and we went though 3 new starters before getting a good one. it was on a 70s chevy but i would be mad if it was on a car that was more difficult to install.

is there a way to mount a old ford type soleniod on a fenderwell like we use to do years ago on a chevy to prevent heat on the soleniod?

Yesterday I installed another new starter from AZone. With the car already on ramps and my tools out, it took me less than 20 minutes to remove the new old one. Another half hour and the new new one was in!

              However, it didn't start!

After several attempts, it did start, but the starter kept grinding, as if it weren't disengaging from the flywheel! Tried this at least three times with the same nasty noise.

              Took it back out.

Installed the old one, and did some more bending of the spade connection on the starter to make a better connection. Maybe that was the problem?

So far I've done at least ten starts since yesterday with no clicking problems. Started up every time.

I hope that was it. I'm taking the new new starter back today and have them test it to see if it disengages from their test machine.

What a lot of work, but I'm getting real good at replacing those @#$%^& ATX "behind the stupid block" starters! Less than an hour start to finish!! (My first time took me about two hours.)

Sometimes when starters won't start when hot, it is in the windings of the starter motor itself. I personally had this happen on me back in the seventies with a Big Block Chevelle. Had to put a heat sheild on the starter eventually. It would just click and after waiting about 15 minutes, it would crank again. Drove me nuts for a while until a buddy of mine told me that the starter motor itself has a bad commutator in it (I believe that is what he called it). Anyway, don't be surprised if it leaves you again on a hot day. To prove this theory, you could always pour water in it to cool it and see if it cranks. Believe me, the starter in your Festiva is about as easy as it gets. The trick is to remove the battery and battery tray and then you have plenty of room. Should not take much more than 20 to 25 minutes - out and in. Good Luck!

My problem seems to be mostly heat related, though once or twice it has clicked when it didn't seem too hot out and the car had been sitting quietly.

                    I found this from Jeg's:

Anyone think I should try it out before trying another (used!) starter?

                      Interesting and not too expensive!

But I've never heard of the OEM ATX starters having a "known" issue with heat.
I can well imagine that the Mcparts rebuilds would, as they will likely use the cheapist material that might get the job done.
I would try another used OEM starter, even a used one is likely higher quality than a Mcparts one!
                      See my PM.

I may try a used starter as soon as I can find one around here! If so, you can bring me just one when we next meet. I may try this wrap too. Can't hurt.

If we meet up at the track, I can put on a little class in "how to swap in a new ATX starter in under an hour" for everyone. And yes, I keep a jackstand in my trunk...best to bring two for this job. No problem.

                        Thanks John!

Thanks Yvan. I already put in my just delivered Odyssey dry cell, which was going into Twinstiva. No change from the original Odyssey, so I don't think the battery is at fault here.
