  • Transmission swap.

nothing too exciting but i cant wait to have my car on the road.

    91 Festiva L 5 Speed Transmisson.

so heres whats going on. i have a bad transmission, in the car. i got the engine unbolted and just hanging there with a hoist. i was going to pull the engine out and then work with the tranny.(getting the axles out with alot more room to work.) but since the clutch and stuff sticks out the side and into the tranny theres not enough room to pull it. so im going to have to do something else.i started to follow the manual but i have a lot of bolts that dont want to come loose. and when i use brute force. it strips for me. not what i want in this situation. im just looking for a simple way to get the axles out without too much work and then i jsut want to pull the tranny out and slap another one back in. im eager to shift again. ive been driving an 91 L plus auto. been annoying but hey theres A/C.

any ideas? i have a good transmission to go in. axles arent my friends.

il take a picture if youd like me too. its a mess. i miss my car so bad.

Seth, I pulled the engine out no problem without pulling the tranny. I even left the exhaust manifold on and all the pullies. use a pry bar between the engine and tranny if needed as you raise the hoist. pushing towards the passenger side. There is room, I promise. I took mine out, replaced the clutch and various other things, then put it back in and drove it home.

The long one is a pain in the rear to get out. I ended up using a hammer and chisel to pop it out.

Remove the front sway bar and then remove the bolt from the lower control arms to the frame. This will allow you some movement at the wheel end so that you can get the axle to clear the tranny case.

well....is the part that is in the tranny spinning? I have a feeling that you let the gears drop, you needed to put something in the shaft hole like a broom handle or something.....maybe they moved on you.

                        I think GenevaDirt maybe right!
I hope not, but it would explain the situation.

                        Spider gears may have dropped!

Anyone ever get them back into position without breaking open the tranny?

no they didnt move. the tranny when i got it had pvc piping in it incase of that. its not spinning in the tranny. right there at that boot you can see it mova around. and not spin it so i think the joint came loose of something.

Look inside the output holes and you should see splines inside a bit. If you do then your good, if not then they dropped.

are you using the right axel's? auto and manual are not interchangeable.
