  • can't find it.. errggg... Gear ratios 4 speed, and 5 speed

    Going to try to get a 5 speed from sho-tyme

    questions. 5th IS overdrive, right?

    what are the ratios between the two?

    how hard is the swap?

    what else should I do while it's apart?

    will my Pacesetter short shifter be fine with the 5 speed?

    I have rebuilt and replaced and modified just about ever vehicle under the sun. EXCEPT any FWD imports... all this transaxle stuff is new to me... lol..

    thanks for the help.

    The first four gears are the same.
    The fifth gear is overdrive in the five speed.
    Final drive is the same.
    Bolts right up with no problems.
    Replace the seals and fluid and clutch if needed.

        I am confused, if 5th is overdrive, how is the final drive the same? or am I just confusing myself with the terms?

            I thought that someone here said that the 5spd is a double overdrive trans and that the 4spd is the same without the 5th gear (3spd overdrive) ??? Do a search, if you're lucky something other than every post from the past month will come up :wink:

              If anyone finds the ratio can someone (if they have gone fast enough with a stock tranny) tell me what top mph at overdrive gear

                The "final drive" in a FWD is the equivalent of the rear differential of a rear wheel drive car. A FWD has the transmission and rear end all in one housing. The gear ratio for 4th gear is 0.861 to 1 and for 5th gear is 0.692 to 1. The final drive ratio is 3.777 to 1.
                You gonna race that thing?

                  third gear is 1.03:1, and the 4 spd is listed from the factory as an overdrive transmision. so, YES, a 5 spd is a double overdrive.

                    AH!

                    DUH!

                    That makes sense, SO, you are saying that the diff gearing is the same on the 4 and 5, so the 5 speed is definitely a double overdrive, therefore reducing my R's at the same speed in 4th, compared to 5th... just like I was thinking...

                    the 5th in a 5 speed is just another higher gear.. just what I wanted..

                    correct???

                            According the the 1989 Ford Shop manual that I have ( FPS-12133-88 ) on page 16-41-52, the ratios are:
                            1st = 3.454
                            2nd = 1.944
                            3rd = 1.275
                            4th = 0.861
                            5th = 0.692 (5 speed only)
                            rev = 3.583
                            Axel = 3.777
