  • 89 Carb Stumbles under no load.

    Background:
It starts and runs great. Can rev the engine fine. Some time it will die out on the first start when the engine is cold. but always restarts fine. After starting cold if I drive it about a half mile and sit at a red light, when I start to take off the engine will almost choke out and buck if I am under load. So I know to rev the the engine and then let out on the clutch. and I can usually get going fine. After it warms up a little this problem goes away. (Stuck Choke, Choke Heater ??) I can live with it but thought it might be related.

New problem: Last couple of days when I am driving and just kind of maintaining speed, the car has started stumbling doesn't matter what speed. I can keep it under control by feathering and accelerating.

Things I've checked: the screen in the tank is clean and did the zip tie mod to keep it from bottoming out, tank looks ok, a small corrosion spot but no loose stuff. Replaced fuel pump 1k ago, changed wires rotor and cap, air filter, fuel filter, plugs look good (Dusty Brown) compression is ok (195,165,180,190). Thought it might be vacuume so i checked everthing I could find. Need to run a line inside so I can watch my vac gauge under driving conditions.

What do you think? trash in carb. sticking carb. EGR circuit problem. bad sensor(i.e. oxy sens) Bad gas? sticking/Burned valve?

    Thanks
    Eric

check out: Rpickle, this thread's for you... it may give you a better idea as to what your engine is doing. if you have any specific questions, ask me in that thread.

I've read it over several times. Thanks for taking the time to get the info out. Not many people want to try carbs. I just didn't want to jump in on that post and confuse things more. By the way my Dad gave me this old piece of test equipment from his service station It is Blue with 3 big analog meters a lot of plug in wires and a switch that says 4-6-8 cylinder. Is that the test gear you were talking about in the other post. Its about 4 feet high and he said it was for carb cars. Ive got to dust it off and see if I can figure it out.
      Thanks

^^ nope, that ain't it... the Star Diag unit i'm talking about is hand held and strictly for electronics.

post a pic of your unit, i might be able to tell you how to work it.

The rack says "AC" in a a red circle like ac delco then GM then diaqnostics center. It has charts on the front that say stuff like igniton etc... Ill try to get it out where I can take a pic of it.

Does this make sense: The clamp on the negative side of the battery was a litte to big to tighten all the way. I cleaned it up and got it down firm. I am going to look for smaller clamps today and replace both. THE CAR RUNS LIKE NEW! I hope this isn't just a coincidince. The only other thing I could think of is occasionally Ill get a drip or two of water where my relays and computer are. Its rained here the last couple of days and maybe somthing got damp and dried out. Checked timing and it was dead on the little T mark. Played withe the vacuume lines on the dist. Car ran bad with with the line pluged either way. Put it back with vac on top and red hash closest to the cap. worked on AC some Then tightened Batt. This did involve pulling the negative wire for a few minutes.(reset something maybey?) Did not drive it. Drove it to work this morning and felt like someone had put a new engine in it. Could it be as simple as a shakey ground?

          Thanks

poor grounds can cause any and all of the problems you mention. if the ECM doesn't have a proper ground, it can't control the carb properly. likewise, if any of te components aren't grounded properly, they won't function as they should.

you should be concerned about the water near your ECM, as any moisture around that area can cause corosion and that will act like an in-line resistor, causing undesired opperation of components. Find the leak and fix it, then pull each connector in that area (one at a time) and clean them as best you can.

The Leak is from the top of the windshield and I have not gotten up the courage to pull the headliner down or the trim ring on the outside and rtv it.

On my distributor the top vacuum hose is black, the bottom has the dashed red line on it. Sorry, don't know where the other ends go...somewhere in the dark place under the carburetor.
