  • What can you tell me about my B3 from these pix

I had to take my down pipe off to fix my exhaust. After i took off the downpipe i got carried away and took off my exhaust manifold.

the #2 outlet is wet with oil while the rest are dry

    What's this mean? Valve seals?

I think the car is burning a little bit of oil, but i cant say for sure because im not driving it yet. The exhaust also smells a little sweet, like its running rich or something. Im not sure, all i've done mechanically on the car so far was just enough to get it running.

^ Yes I would start with some seals , easiest .

Was that pic taken after it sat for a while , or soon after you had ran the engine .

It also looks like you are not keeping the cobs blown out of it

lets see... a few hours earlier i had run it for a few minutes, just long enough to pull it out of the garage to sweep the floor, then put it back in.

I wouldn't worry about the sweet smell of the exhaust... actually, enjoy it while you can before all hydrocarbon emissions are banned. Seriously, tell me you're not in an area where junkyards haven't been shut down for environmental reasons yet. I would just drive the engine till it explodes.

I had a leaky exhaust valve. When I removed the valve cover and turned it over there was a lot of carbon on the underside of the valve cover right over the exhaust valve for one of the cylinders. Compression on that cylinder was low too. First thing I did was to add a chemical cleaner to the oil just before it was changed to remove any crystallized carbon which might be preventing the exhaust valve from closing properly. That was all it needed. Compression came back up and no more carbon being blown onto the underside of the valve cover. I'd suggest an interior engine cleaning as a cheap first attempt at fixing the problem.

im not sure its appropriate to bump this thread, but i sorta have updates.

The plug on the 2nd cylinder is oily and the other 3 are dry and WHITE.

it sounds like the car has a misfire, and i cant get it to go faster than 60mph...

                any suggestions?

Well, I can't help you with your last questions, but I do agree that the valve seals definitely need to be done. while you're at it, see how the valve guides are doing. If there's any wobble in the valve/guide, then it's time to replace 'em. If the engine's gone that far, then it may be time for a rebuild.

BTW: I did my valve seals last weekend. Never done them before, and it was easy. First one took me 5 minutes, the other 7 were done in about 15 minutes total.

It sounds funny idling. Kinda sound like a miss. Could this be why i cant hit 60mph?
