Ive heard that before, but Ive never seen a shift light on a festiva. I know it does something like you say. I cant tell the difference in performance or mileage what ever it is. I will change mine out when the opportunity arises.

I will put a toggle switch on the wire for now as a temp fix so not to be pulled over while driving, thanks all for the welcomes , and 5.0zone are these cars capable of 400k miles? I had no idea, i was just going for fuel economy,,,,what is the secret of keeping these cars running other than they are Kia made engines......

My first engine lasted 265k miles, the second one has about 250k on it now.
Two things to do to make them last:
          1) change the oil regularly - most of my driving is highway so i change it every 5k miles.
          2) change the timeing belt regularly - I change mine every 70k miles

Thats the only one Ive never had, a 88/89 manual. The fifth gear switch I showed in the picture is on a 1990 five speed w/o a shift light. Where is your shift light located on the cluster ? I want one now.

                    Update:
I went out and looked in the owners guide of my 89 auto and sure enough there is a shift light shown. #5. Its not in the 1990 owners guide. The switch must do something else too since its on cars w/o the shift light. I feel cheated now that I know I dont have a shift light.

I like the gray highlight on the orange non tach clusters. I wonder if that was year specific. After I got my first tach cluster I kept freaking out thinking I was out of gas. I was use to looking at the fuel gauge directly to the left of the speedometer. The gauge directly left of the speedometer on the tack cluster is the temp gauge. Id glance at it before going somewhere and think I was on empty. It took a couple of weeks to break my self.

here is a thread that has this information:
Post your Festiva or Aspire repair and maintenance issues. - USE THIS FORUM FOR ANY TECHNICAL RELATED POST (IE. How do I change my oil?, How to remove axle from tranny?, etc)

there are 2 switches for the 5spd tranny and they are identical switches and both have 2 green wires emerging from them: the switch my the radiator drain plug (also directly below the battery) is the back up light switch.
The other one below the Cv axle is the neutral switch.

For the 4 speeds, there are also 2 switches, but they are much different than the 5 spds. One switch is the back up lights and neutral switch, and the other is 4th gear shift light cancel. See FB71's 20th post in the above thread.

The reverse switch is on the side of the trans. (front of car) near the radiator. The wire runs up over the trans and has a black plug....I think?
There are two switches on the side the one closer to the engine is the 4th or 5th gear switch......the one closer to the drivers side is the Rev. switch.
Just unplug it and see if the lights are out.....if not.....trace the ground wire from the lights to find out where it's damaged (grounded)
