  • Broken transmission (NOW WITH PICS)

Okay I was passing someone, pulled ahead of them, went to pass another car, shifted down into 3rd about 50mph, whinned it out went to shift into 4th, let off clutch loud grinding noise, pushed back in clutch, pull it into neutral back into 4th let off clutch, pushed in clutch, pulled it into neutral, let off clutch same grinding noise. No matter the gear. I pulled it over and shut it off. Went back to try and start it and move it and the engine just makes one single clunk when I turn the key like it was in gear, I push in the clutch and it does the same thing.

BP engine with G25 Hydrolic Transmission.

What do you think it could be? I was thinking maybe my clutch disc exploded from being old and the high RPMS, any other thoughts?

Any chance you over reved it and blew the engine?

No the engine was running fine when I pulled over, it only made a noise when I let out the clutch like the gears where only partially engaged.

"And don't say stuff like that!"

Does it roll? Or is it locked up?

I am familiar with that sound , It sounds like you have trashed a bearing in the tranny , It will make it in 1,2,3,and maybe go away in 4th ??

You put it in neutral , let the clutch out and coast and still hear it ??

Yeah even when it was coasting whenever I let out the clutch no matter the gear it would start to grind even in neutral. I can roll the car, I pushed it out of the field I parked in reverse. then I moved it forward. It seems to roll fine. No noise when pushing. What about the throw out bearing?

I would say no to the T/O brg ,
OK how about sitting still , motor running clutch in ?
That will stop all input to the tranny , I am sure the noise stops then as soon as you let the clutch out , it starts .

When you are rolling , the trans is turning internally from the wheels , so if it a bearing , it will make noise the whole time it is rolling ,clutch in or out .

It seemed fine when I was rolling as long as I had the clutch in, now that I turned off the car it wont start though like it is stuck in a gear.

It should still start with the clutch in. Unless you grenaded the clutch.

WOW Logan , I am not 100% sure now , Not sure why it will not start , even if it was stuck in gear , clutch in , it should start.

I have that problem with my red Festiva , stuck in 3rd , still starts and drives ..only in 3rd

it almost sounds like exactly what my friend with his tiburon he blew the differential in his car, he actually sent the diff. pin through the bell housing and it was binding against the clutch, it ran fine until it came to a stop then afterwards it wouldn't start again

I am leaning more and more towards a grenaded clutch at the moment, but Damkid you could be right. It just didn't seem to do anything till I tried to shift which is weird, also like I pressed the clutch in and when it caught the flywheel is came apart.

Well the car started this morning, It really struggled at first, then fired off, ground for a second, then seemed fine, I even got it into gear, ground alittle and took off. I was having my wife lead with the truck that I was going to tow it with, but I seemed okay, until I tried to go past 3rd, and I couldn't get it back into any gear. So I ended up pulling it the rest of the way to my dads house. We went to pick a part this morning to grab another transmission (JUST IN CASE), but they didn't have any I could use! AHHH I hope it is just the clutch now. If it isn't it could be a few months before another protege comes in with a tranny I can use.

If it is just the clutch then I will be upgrading to something more fit for a turbo setup, good time to upgrade I figure.
